Cakes for other occasions

This cake was made for my daughter who graduated from Portsmouth University. Therefore the cake was decorated in the colours of that university. It was based on a fruitcake so that slices could be sent to family & friends who could not come to the celebration. The main decoration was made of ‘jigsaw’ parts of the book (deep purple), scroll (white) and mortar board (black) which when put together gave a really good 3-D effect. The plaques on the sides then had BA added as this was her degree.

This decoration was made as a part of my ‘Professional’ Cake Decorator’s course. It is actually a polystyrene ‘dummy’ base on to which the icing was added and then various techniques applied to achieve the effect shown. The embossing was coloured and brushed to my design and the same cutter used to make the upright design around the wild rose flowers on the top. By embossing extra flowers on the edge of the cake, and colouring them, before attaching the wild roses, a 3-D effect can be achieved.

I made this cake for a very special Mum – mine! I made a lemon sponge as this is her favourite, and coloured it green and yellow, also her favourite. Mum cannot get out in the garden now, so I decided to bring the garden to her with the flowers and butterflies, adding a bit of sparkle to add to the effect. As she was not expecting anything special for ‘Mothers Day’ it was a real surprise for her (and Dad enjoyed it too!)

This is a very versatile cake and can be made in many colours with various flowers in the spray to fit the occasion. It could be used as a Valentine cake, or an anniversary cake, or a birthday cake for someone special. It can be made as a sponge (any flavour) or a rich fruit cake, depending on the occasion, and can show someone that you really care.

I made this cake as a ‘thank you’ to a lovely girl who worked in our local building society, and who always had a smile for her customers. I presented it to her on her last day of working in Wootton Bassett, and I think she was very happy, as she nearly cried!

This cake was made for a friend of Delia’s. He just asked for a cake, giving no instructions for size, colours or decoration. As I was making another chocolate sponge, I used the same mixture. I covered the cake & left Delia to use her artistic skills to decorate it. I think Pete was pleased.

The saying goes ‘say it with flowers’, Diane says it with a large chocoholics cake! The office where this was taken to were very pleased to receive their ‘Thank You’ and I understand that it did not last very long. A job well done!

This cake was based on an 8” square rich fruit cake, which I covered in marzipan and white icing. The design on the top was printed from the official picture of the new Royal Wootton Bassett Coat of Arms, presented to the town by the Queen. On the 4 corners were pictures of the original town hall for which the town is well known. This cake was cut and given to the townspeople on the occasion of the Princess Royal presenting the new title to the Town.

This dummy cake was requested by one of the High Street shop owners to be part of her decorations for this very momentous occasion. I added the new Royal Coat of Arms, together with 4 red roses in memory of all of the fallen heroes who have been repatriated through the town for which the town was granted the Royal status. This was a very poignant cake for me to make, as I have often stood in silence in the High Street on these very special occasions.

This 12” Victoria sponge was designed and made for the celebration of the 5th Anniversary of the Mika Fan Club. I covered the cake in white icing and then added the badge which the client had emailed to me. I also added 4 small photographs of Mika to the 4 corners of the cake. I added ribbons to match the 3 colours of the emblem in the centre. The client was thrilled!
